RECAP: AMSOIL AX - Baltimore, MD

So, the first race for us to get to in a new year is typically an Arenacross round. More specifically, Baltimore because the drive is short and it makes it hard to pass up! We decided to kick off 2016 by doing just that and catching Round 2 of the AMSOIL Arenacross Series at Royal Farms Arena. Here is our quick little recap from the weekend.

Friday Night:

Well, we got on the road early Friday afternoon to miss the 495 traffic because anyone who has ever traveled that road knows that it is not out of the ordinary to go 4 miles in 2 hours. Anyway, Baltimore Arenacross has become a ritual the last couple of years to start off the new year for us. It gives us a chance to get to the races and also grab some content with our sister company M81 Media. It always provides good times catching up with everyone that we may not have seen in a few months, not to mention Arenacross is pretty action-packed and is always full of excitement.

The racing on Friday night was pretty solid. Arenacross really never disappoints. The track got a new layout this year with the addition of the fifth lane and the sweeper turn up onto the stage, which we thought was a nice touch. We always like it anytime Arenacross gets some changes in the layout. Now, the track seemed to be a little difficult to race hard on but, nevertheless, the night was action-packed as you would expect with any Arenacross race. Maybe it was just us but damn did it seem like the pyro in opening ceremonies had a little extra punch this year!

The whoops seemed like they were one of the more tricky sections of the track (big surprise) and as the night went on they were getting really cupped out. This was causing a lot of guys some trouble, Brandon Hartranft was an example of this. We hope he was okay after this nasty spill.

It was awesome getting to check out some of the younger talent, which was some of the top amateur riders in the country. Plus it's always nice to see the vets tear it up. Arenacross definitely brings a rad mix of talent that is fun to watch. It was also really cool to see Austin Stroupe back and racing competitively. He had been off the bike and away from racing for quite a while but damn was he fast!

Saturday Night:

We got up to Baltimore much earlier on Saturday and had some time to roam around and catch the final couple bits of qualifying. The day didn't start out very well for a couple guys from what we heard. Apparently, Jarred Williams was seriously injured in the early qualifiers after taking a hard hit at the end of the rhythm lane. From what we gathered it is still pretty serious and they have set up a GoFundMe account for him. We also heard one rider bailed out over the finish after getting a little to far off track. We saw the bike and boy was his wheel demolished. We definitely wish both of these guys a speedy recovery.

The racing seemed to be much more intense (no pun intended on the "more intense") on Saturday night! Even down to the Head-to-Head Battles, everything seemed to be stepped up a notch. The crowd was definitely into it the whole night. Austin Stroupe took a hard crash that brought out the red flag. We were standing just at the end of the rhythm lane where it happened and the fans were lining the rails to see if he was alright. He seemed to be okay but it definitely took him a while to get up which had everyone a little nervous. Once he did get up and walked off under his own power, everyone had a big sigh of relief.

The crowd was loving the action from the 50cc 4-8 Class out there ripping up the track too! A couple of the kids were sending a double into the rhythm section that was really getting the crowd off their seats. It was cool to watch and being in the stands for that race listening to everyone cheering like that. I could only imagine the smiles on their faces under their helmets.
